Jerome Booth, Chairman

Dr. Jerome Booth is a well-known economist and leading expert on emerging markets.  In 2013 Jerome retired from Ashmore Group, a world leading emerging markets asset management group he helped establish in 1999 in a Management Buy-Out from ANZ Bank. Prior to ANZ he worked in the Strategic Planning unit of the Inter-American Development Bank from 1991-4 in Washington, D.C.

Prior to this, Jerome had appointments as a Lecturer in Economics at Christ Church, Oxford, a consultancy business advising on aid issues, and a position in the mid-1980s in her Majesty’s Department of Trade and Industry.

Chairman of the Governing Board of Anglia Ruskin University, Jerome has a D.Phil and an M.Phil in Economics from the University of Oxford as well as a B.Sc in Geography from the University of Bristol.

Mark Weiller, Executive Director

Mark Weiler

Mark joined in 2015 and is responsible for product origination and development, global distribution, and institutional client management.

Prior to joining NSAM, Mark spent over 10 years with Ashmore Investment Management in various positions including Head of Client & Product Management – Americas and Global Head of Consultant Relations and Corporate Treasury Solutions.

Mark has also held senior institutional product and client management positions at Citigroup and Credit Suisse and served as a Senior Consultant & Principal with Mercer Investment Consulting. Mark began his career in 1990 as an Analyst in Global Securities at Morgan Stanley.

He holds a dual BA degree in International Relations and Italian Literature from Syracuse University, and received an MBA in Global Finance (Hons) from Fordham University. Mark is currently an Executive MPA candidate in Environmental Policy & Sustainability Management at Columbia University.  He received a Certified Investment Management Analyst designation from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, in 1998. He is also licensed as a Series 7 and Series 63 Registered Representative.

Max Trautman, Managing Director and Head of Risk Management

Max TrautmanMax Trautman joined New Sparta Asset Management in 2017 as Head of Risk Management and Managing Director for Renewable Energy Strategies.

Max is an investment and risk manager with over 25 years’ combined buy- and sell-side experience in financial markets. On the sell side, Max spent two years at Citibank and 11 years at Goldman Sachs, where he structured financial products, managed trading teams, advised clients and invested proprietary capital. On the buy side, he co-founded multi-billion-dollar investment manager Peloton Partners, and later Stoneworks Asset Management. Most recently he managed a leveraged portfolio at Millennium Capital Partners.

He has been an active investor in UK renewables with his personal account since 2012. Max has a BA from the American University in Washington, D.C., and an MA in International Finance and Economics from SIPA at Columbia University in New York City. Prior to higher education he worked for six years as a commercial deep sea diver in the offshore oil industry in the North Sea, India and SE Asia and for three years as an independent floor trader on the SIMEX futures exchange in Singapore.

Jeff KirbyJeff Kirby joined New Sparta Asset Management in July 2017 as Managing Director and Head of Real Estate.

Jeff is a dynamic and highly experienced real estate and investment executive specializing in acquisition, financial structuring, development and fund management, with significant IB and PE exposure. Jeff has managed over $100m in CEE investment funds.

Before joining NSAM, Jeff was CEO of EFG, a vertically-integrated real estate platform focused on CEE with a GDV of €2bn, where he oversaw land acquisition, development, construction management and fund management. More recently, Jeff was CEO of Trinity Russian Retail Partners, an institutional grade Russian retail platform, where he oversaw the development and structured financing of retail parks.

Fluent in German, Romanian and Russian, Jeff holds a BA in Environmental Design, Architecture and Urban Design, as well as qualifications in Corporate Finance and Real Estate Law.

Stelian Mitu, Investment Director

Stelian Mitu

Stelian Mitu joined New Sparta Asset Management in May 2017 as Investment Director for the Real Estate division.

Stelian supervised private equity and real estate investments in emerging markets for more than 15 years. His key areas of expertise are commercial real estate, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, and agribusiness.

Some investments under Stelian's supervision became major brands in Eastern Europe, bypassing the €100 million threshold in sales or assets.

Stelian has served in board positions in the real estate, pharmaceutical, and manufacturing industries for more than 12 years combined, mostly in publicly – listed companies.

He is a CFA charter holder since 2003, has an Magna Cum Laude MBA in finance from University of Quebec in Montreal, and a MSc in Engineering.

Ivo Arnus, Investment Director

Ivo Arnús joined New Sparta Asset Management in 2017 as Investment Director with a focus on Renewable Energy.

Ivo began his career in the clean-tech sector in 2010 by advising several Clean-Tech PE funds in the City of London (i.e. Climate Change Capital, Greencoat Capital). Soon after, Ivo joined RWE Innogy’s portfolio company Quietrevolution as Project Development Director where he established and ran the development team and its operations. In 2013, Ivo moved to Norvento Enerxia, a successful Spanish developer, operator and technology manufacturer, as Director of Business Development where he stayed until joining NSAM.

Ivo is a seasoned deal originator and closer, having completed over 25 renewable energy projects with Norvento alone. Throughout these years in the industry, Ivo has acquired strong expertise in the areas of project development and operations of renewable energy plants in several countries. 

Ivo has a Masters in Industrial Engineering from the Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña and an MBA from INSEAD Business School. 

Marcus Booth, Senior Distribution Analyst

Marcus BoothMarcus Booth is a member of the distribution team at New Sparta Asset Management and has a background in economics and economic research. Marcus has partial oversight of many of the operational aspects of the company, including compliance, investor relations and technological infrastructure. He also liaises and assists with distribution and research arms of the company.

Prior to joining New Sparta Asset Management, Marcus worked as an Analyst within the New Sparta Group, where he worked across financial and statistical modelling, industry and market research, company due diligence and content publication.

Marcus holds a BA and an MSc in Economics, both from the University of Sheffield.

Fabian Frizell, Analyst

Fabian is responsible for the analysis and execution of real estate investments in Africa.

Before joining NSAM, he was a Research Analyst for the African Private Equity and Venture Capital Association (AVCA).

He holds a BA in Politics, Psychology and Sociology from the University of Cambridge. Prior to Cambridge, he spent a year with the Zimbabwe Forum, leading outreach efforts. 

Waqar Zaman, Analyst

Waqar ZamanWaqar is responsible for the analysis and implementation of real estate investments in India.

Prior to joining NSAM, Waqar worked as a Client Services Executive in Invoice Finance for Working Capital Partners.

He holds a BSc in Applied and Human Biology from Aston University, a Graduate Diploma in Finance from Birkbeck, University of London (UoL) and a MSc in Mathematical Finance from Queen Mary, UoL.

Axel Hakansson, Analyst

Axel Hakansson

Axel is responsible for internal due diligence of real estate investments in India and Africa.

Prior to NSAM, he worked at Cevian Capital (Malta) Ltd, running analytics work and due diligence on investment flows.

Axel holds a BSc (Hons) in International Management from Warwick Business School, including studies at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia.

William Barry, Managing Director

William BarryBill has over 20 years of experience as a senior, emerging market-focused financial and business development professional.

Prior to his appointment at NSE, Bill was the Regional Manager for East Africa in charge of regional project development and investment opportunities for eleQtra, a Sub-Saharan Africa-focused project developer. Bill joined eleQtra in 2013 from ContourGlobal, an EM-focused developer, operator and owner of electric power businesses, where he was SVP and Head of Global Construction Projects, as well as VP of Business Development responsible for LatAm, Sub-Saharan African and European project development and M&A.

While at ContourGlobal, Bill led the KivuWatt (Rwanda) lake-bed methane gas extraction project, which was awarded the Euromoney Project Finance 2011 Africa Power Deal of the Year.

Prior to these roles, Mr. Barry held senior positions at the Overseas Private Investment Corporation, Moody’s Investors Service, Merrill Lynch’s investment banking division and the Mirant Corporation. Mr. Barry holds a BA (Economics) from the George Washington University and an MBA (Finance) from the New York University Stern School of Business.

David Anson, Head of Project Development

David Anson

David has 25 years’ experience in developing and financing power projects, mainly in emerging markets. Most recently he was the Regional Manager in charge of Southern African project development and investment opportunities for eleQtra, a Sub-Saharan Africa focused project development company. Prior to eleQtra David was with AES Corp for over 20 years, covering power projects from inception through to commercial operations.

He has experience with both thermal and renewable projects, and has successfully overseen the construction of projects in Sub-Saharan Africa and Europe. During his time with AES he was responsible for nine power project financings, including the refinancing of AES’ acquisition of the 600MW Kelvin Power Plant. At AES Sonel, he was responsible for the project finance team that led the $60 million Limbe power plant financing, and the $350 million financing of the utility’s refurbishment program by a consortium of eight international and African development finance institutions.

Prior to working in infrastructure development, David worked in oil exploration, mainly in the Far East.  He is a member of the Institute of Directors (UK), and holds an MBA from the London Business School and a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Western Australia.

Richard Scott, Project Director

Richard ScottRichard has over 14 years’ experience in project development, financing, engineering and construction management across emerging markets in Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

In 2013 Richard joined private equity firm Berkeley Energy, where he supported the development and financing of hydro and wind investments in India and the Philippines, before relocating to Kenya to help raise the $200 million Africa Renewable Energy Fund and lead the development of a number of hydro, wind and geothermal investments in East Africa.

While with consulting engineering firm Mott MacDonald, he spent three years managing a $250 million infrastructure development program in Iraq, followed by two years in Afghanistan delivering a power and transportation infrastructure program.

Richard has also worked for Scottish Power (now Iberdrola) as an engineer on wind projects, as a Private Sector Infrastructure Policy Manager at the UK Department of International Development and as a Project Developer with Joule Africa, where he supported the development of several hydro power projects in West Africa.

Richard is a Chartered Civil Engineer (MICE), a Chartered Project Manager (APM) and holds a First Class Honours Degree in Civil Engineering and Construction Management from the University of Edinburgh.

Camille Astier, Legal Director

With over 15 years’ legal experience, Camille has worked for leading international law firms advising on multiple leveraged finance, emerging market and other cross-border transactions.

More recently Camille was General Counsel of the Africa Renewable Energy Fund, a private equity fund dedicated to renewable energy in Sub-Saharan Africa, where she was responsible for all legal matters, including structuring new transactions, negotiating acquisition and financing documents, and compliance.

Camille also dedicates time to legal capacity-building programs and mentoring junior women in Africa. She was nominated for Legal Week’s ‘Associate of the Year’ award in 2013 and won the Ugandan Law Society’s ‘International Lawyer of the Year’ award in 2016.

Camille holds law degrees from the Sorbonne University (France), Köln University (Germany) and BPP Law School (England) as well as a literature degree from the Sorbonne University.

Brian Killman, Finance Director

Brian is a Chartered Certified Accountant who has held senior finance positions in SME and PLC companies operating in various sectors including defence and security, technology, manufacturing, and retail.

Brian holds an MBA from the University of Warwick Business School.

Noreht Viljoen, Director of Human Resources

Noreht has over a decade of experience constructing, implementing and managing international human resources infrastructure and operations, specialising in employee and departmental training and development, recruitment, performance management and headcount optimization.

Noreht is currently responsible for building, operating and maintaining all HR processes, policies and documentation within New Sparta Asset Management.

Brenda De Carvalho, Head of Administration

Brenda De Carvalho

Brenda de Carvalho is PA to the CEO and Head of Administration at New Sparta Asset Management, which she joined in January 2017.

Brenda has more than 10 years of experience in office and studio management in numerous settings and industries. Prior to joining New Sparta she was E.A. to the London Director & Studio Manager at architecture firm AWW, she has also worked at PwC and the Global Green Growth Institute. Brenda is highly skilled in systems administration and IT workflow optimisation.
